SMITHVILLE – There’s a bunch of familiar faces heading back to next week’s MSHSAA Boys Golf Championships.

For the second year in a row, Rockhurst and Liberty North will represent the Kansas City area as the two state-qualifying squads from the Kansas City area. Those two teams finished on top of the final standings at the Class 4 Sectional 4 Championships on Monday, May 8, at Paradise Pointe Golf Complex.

Rockhurst claimed the title as the metro’s top team for the third time in the last four years. Led by two returning players from last year’s state runner-up team – Ethan Packel and Jacob Propeck – the Hawklets posted a sectional-winning team score of 305.

Packel fired an even-par 72 on The Posse Course and earned individual medalist honors, while Propeck turned in a 4-over-par 76. Rob Enright (78), Michael Bessenbacher (79) and Hale St. Clair (80) rounded out Rockhurst’s strong team effort.

Liberty North posted a team score of 311, led by Drew Neuerburg’s 2-over 74. Caleb Davis and Tanner Collins carded matching 77s, while Daniel Duffin’s 83 provided the all-important fourth score for the team.

Lee’s Summit West wound up 14 strokes behind the Eagles and took third with a 325. Lee’s Summit (327) and St. Joseph Central (328) finished just a few strokes behind, while Staley (331), Park Hill (343), Lee’s Summit North (348) and Liberty (349) rounded out the final team standings.

The MSHSAA Class 4 state tournament will be held Monday, May 15, and Tuesday, May 16, at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club in Joplin.
